The Need for Leadership

Scott RenkeAs a big basketball fan, I was introduced to John Wooden's "Pyramid of Success" several years ago. It consists of building blocks of success defining leadership characteristics. It has been a great way for me to focus on leadership qualities. The two cornerstones to Wooden's pyramid are Industriousness and Enthusiasm.

As Wooden explained Industriousness, "Success travels in the company of very hard work. There is no trick, no easy way." Part of working hard is holding ourselves accountable to the metrics we set up. There are no shortcuts to success. Work hard and work smart.

As for the other cornerstone โ€“ Enthusiasm โ€“ Wooden says, "Your energy and enjoyment, drive and dedication will stimulate and greatly inspire others." Remember the last time you were around others that inspired you? I believe enthusiasm comes from inside. It comes from wanting to make a difference and being part of something bigger than yourself.

With winter in the rearview mirror and spring and summer upon us, this is the time to not only work hard but work with great enthusiasm and excitement, inspiring those around us. Let's make a difference together!
