Planning for Success

People in the residential housing industry have worked diligently over the past few years to eliminate waste and tightened their belts wherever possible...all while maintaining the same level of services to customers. Many successful companies have also shifted some of their focus and efforts into markets with which they are less familiar. These same customers have not abandoned their core markets, but have found creative ways to stretch into new market segments.

While residential construction remains very slow, there have been good opportunities to pursue in the light commercial segment. When distributors commit to penetrating this market, some excellent results have been achieved. After struggling the first half of the year, one customer in the upper Midwest saw an opportunity with light commercial projects and decided to pursue them in earnest. After committing themselves to this endeavor, and also engaging Windsor's resources in product development, engineering and sales, their perseverance resulted in a nice recovery in the second half of the year. Through the process, they gained valuable contacts and insight that will result in increased opportunities and sales into the future.

Most of our distributors have focused primarily on new construction over the years. In 2009, either due to their customers' shifting focus, or because they made a conscious effort to change direction, many have found new business in the replacement and remodeling sector. As a result, Windsor has enjoyed success in this arena as well. With custom sizing available in all three product lines, our windows work very well for full unit replacement. Windsor's Next Dimension Signature product offers a replacement vinyl double hung that works well for retrofit applications. In addition, Win Pac double hung replacement sash kits are offered in Pinnacle Wood, Pinnacle Clad and Legend. Many of our distributors are now working aggressively to gain a foothold in this segment and plan to expand these efforts in 2010 and beyond.

As we approach the end of the year, we can benefit from what we've learned and apply new skills to achieving success in 2010. There appears to be solid merit in expanding our markets and reaching new segments. Had we not been forced to, we may have never ventured into these sectors.

Involve your Regional Sales Manager as you plan for 2010. Our people are eager to work with you to develop and execute specific market plans.
