Constantly Striving to Improve

Curtis Duncan is a man who is constantly striving to improve. Not just as one of Windsor’s regional sales managers, but in all aspects of his life. Curtis covers the Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC markets. Curtis didn’t start running competitively until his late 20s. He ran as part of conditioning for team sports throughout high school. But now, he does it for fun. A few years ago, he decided to get serious. He now trains on a regular basis, selects specific marathons to participate in, and completes a set distance each week. He established an aggressive goal for himself… to complete a marathon in each of the 50 United States.

The challenge of completing marathons is something he has come to enjoy. He has taken the position that these races are an opportunity to compete against the distance and compete against himself. Training during the week and travelling to the races on the weekends requires a big commitment. Time away from his family takes a toll and he recognizes the additional responsibly this requires of his wife. He must find a balance between dedicating time to his wife and young family and this hobby.

He completed his first marathon in 2014 and thought that would be it. But then his younger brother asked if he’d help him train for one, so in 2018 they trained together and completed the Richmond, VA marathon. After that race, they ended up training together and competing in marathons in 11 states. They even completed a few through the complexity of organized races in 2020 and 2021. Eventually, Curtis started signing up for races without his brother and it has now become a solo venture. He recently completed the Louisiana marathon, which marked his 22nd state.

Curtis says that each race has its own unique personality and each one leaves a lasting impression. The race organizers always send you through their nicest parts of town and the loveliest neighborhoods. As someone who appreciates architecture, he enjoys the distraction of looking at the cool buildings along the course. Some of the races that stand out in his mind were the trips paired with family vacations to Myrtle Beach, NC, Knoxville TN, and Orlando, FL. He has run around the outer track of Churchill Downs in Louisville, through the Cinderella Castle in Disney World, and has run from Maine to a Canadian island for an international race! This hobby has given him the opportunity to run along the boardwalk in Atlantic City, NJ, as well as through the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. He has learned that training mentally is just as important as training physically. He finds that reflecting on gratitude and drawing on past experiences during each race helps him push through to the finish line.

Curtis has been committed to this goal for 5 ½ years so he plans to hit the midpoint this year by competing in Maryland, California and Idaho. His goal is to complete 4 marathons per year and if he can keep up that pace, he will reach his goal of competing in all 50 states in 2029 or 2030.

Windsor is very proud to have such a committed individual on our team and commends him for his dedication! We can all learn from and be inspired by Curtis’ determination and drive to set this personal goal.
