An Employee Home Makeover Completed by Iowa Plant Volunteers

One of Windsor’s outstanding employees was recently selected to receive an employee home makeover. When we put out a call for applications, Mustaf Abdi submitted a modest request, asking to have the porch of his home repaired. He said the ceiling needed replacement and the floor of the porch needed to be sanded and stained. Mustaf was also concerned that the front door of the home was not swinging properly on the hinges, and he was hoping that could be repaired.

Mustaf is a very hardworking and loyal employee and his son, Mohamed Abdi, also works in Windsor’s vinyl production facility. Their stately old home is located in the heart of Des Moines and provides comfort and shelter for his 11 family members. The committee was eager to help Mustaf on this project, knowing that he had already been working diligently to improve the interior of his home. Once the work on the interior of the home was nearing completion, he wanted to turn his focus toward the exterior of the property. Mustaf dreamed of fixing up the outside of his home and making it more attractive and his co-workers were happy to help him accomplish this goal.

The Employee Makeover committee was especially excited that this project would positively impact the property value of Mustaf’s home as well as improve the everyday lives of his family members. Another bonus was enhancing the curb appeal of a home in one of Des Moines’ oldest neighborhoods. In addition to Mustaf’s original request, the volunteers decided to create new flower beds, put down fresh mulch and plant flowers, reconstruct a stone retaining wall that had collapsed, purchase new porch furniture, and install new gutters, new house numerals and a new mailbox. These features will enhance the family’s lifestyle and will allow Mustaf to relax and enjoy his time outside of work this summer.

Mustaf and his family are looking forward to sitting outside and enjoying his neighborhood on the warm summer days ahead. To be able to improve the lives of two employees and their large family in one project was very motivating and rewarding.

Once again, Windsor employees made new friends and lots of memories at this year’s Iowa Special Olympics. It was an opportunity to give back to the community and to be inspired by athletes with special needs who demonstrate incredible perseverance and resilience. The event was held in Ames, Iowa, on May 25-26, 2023. More than 2,500 athletes competed in a wide variety of sports, including bocce ball, swimming, soccer, cycling, track and field, tennis and more. There’s no better feeling than seeing the proud smiles and sense of satisfaction these athletes display after participating in these athletic activities.
